Founded in 1866, one of the earliest Western medicine hospitals since Shanghai's opening. Affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.
History
In the late 19th century, the hospital performed Shanghai's first ophthalmology surgery and ovariotomy. In the early 20th century, it was equipped with a modern operating room, the first ambulance, and advanced X-ray equipment. In the 1970s, it developed China's first color TV gastroscope. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Tongren Hospital discovered and successfully treated Shanghai's first COVID-19 patient.

Research & Innovation
Since 2014, the hospital has built the Hongqiao International Medical Research Institute relying on Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. In 2019, the Shanghai Key Laboratory for Gastrointestinal Tumor Prevention, Innovation and Translation was established.
